Standard, fun, teens running amok fare

I was suprised to find that this movie was pretty decent. The cast of characters were unsurprisingly one dimensional with very little to go on, such as perhaps understanding any single motivation. The acting is strictly mediocre, with some gaping holes in plot and logic. Nonetheless the film held my attention and was far superior to some of it's peers of late. The story itself is rather ludicrous, but looking past that, the arch of the film is interesting and the direction of the plot is somewhat unique in that it sets itself apart from its counterparts by breaking away from a few of the standard genre cliches. I was impressed by the action sequences, and the film get's huge bonus points for the locales and general atmosphere. I also of course love the fact that the movie is wonderful exploitative as far as making sweeping and hugely exagerated statements about Brazil and American tourists. It reminded me of some of the better 70's exploitation film (mainly Italian cannibal fair) in that it offers up some gruesome deaths in gorgeous exotic settings and plays on stereotypes and urban lore, to maximum effect. Not as smart as Hostel, but not as banal as Wolf Creek, this lands somewhere in the middle.

A Nutshell Review: Turistas

Turistas is a clear cut Hostel wannabe. The similarities are obvious, with a group of backpacking tourists having the time of their lives, only to have their vacation cut short after taking advice fromoutsiders, and find themselves in compromising situations whichthreaten their lives. It's a race against their aggressors as they tryand escape... doesn't it all sound so familiar? The slasher genre cannot be more overcrowded than now. With franchisessuch as Saw and movies like Hills Have Eyes, Hostel, Wolf Creek and sonon, we brace ourselves for more, with the sequels of the previous twomentioned movies coming out soon. I guess such movies, filled with sexand violence, will continue to be made until the box office start toshow signs of severe dents and become unprofitable, and hey, I'm notcomplaining, until now. While you have to tip your hat off at the attempt at tying in urbanlegends (which could be true) about missing personnel and the sweepingstatements made at organ donation, the execution (pardon the pun) ofthis movie, is nothing short of basic formula - sex and nudity at thebeginning (though nothing much to see), followed by plenty of blood, gore and violence to end it all. In fact, the build up takes so long, you wonder if they had forgotten all about the need to put thecharacters under some form of duress and emergency, remembering to doso only in the last 30 minutes of the film.Even then, this movie is a walk in the park compared to its moregruesome counterparts. Boasting only one major gory scene which will belikely to make your stomach churn, everything else is a long stroll tomaking things happen. In fact, having a director of underwaterphotography credited in the opening, is warning enough - there is asevere overindulgence of underwater scenes, which is neitherinteresting or exciting, and dragged on for too long. With itsinadequate lighting and repetitive actions of surfacing for water, thisis perhaps candidate for worst non-action-sequence-ever.If you must scratch your itch in watching a gory movie, then hang on tothose precious dollars until The Hills Have Eyes Again. Unless you're afan of the Las Vegas television series, then you might want to checkout one of the rare big screen outings of Josh Duhamel (who plays Dannyin the series). Otherwise, wait until Michael Bay's Transformers hitthe big screen, he's in that one too.

Save your time for something else

As a old style horror fan, this movie makes the Luke warm category inmy book. There were a few redeeming scenes that made it worthwhile, butoverall, it's not one I would want to see twice. In terms of sex appeal, there were some hot characters, but overall Iwouldn't give it much more than a Luke warm rating.I noticed another commenter made mention that this movie was good aslong as you didn't go into it with high expectations. I would tend toagree with that assessment. I felt the advertising on this film wayover stated the movie itself. I was extremely disappointed because I,as the other guys suggested, was looking for a hot and steamy horrorclassic, so my expectation was high and this film let me way down.

Turistas, go home... The worst this year!

I think who should go home is who made this movie.I haven't and will not watch movies like that.People who made this movie don't think actions like that can damage tourism in Brazil. But who cares? Why you don't go to Salinas for example, and make a movie about gangs here? and maybe you wake up people for a disease you have in your own country. And please make sure to show your government supporting those gangs. It's easy to sit in your tail and start talking about someone else's tail, isn't it?YOUR MOVIE SUCKS BIG TIME!!!

Is this horror, or just really bad reality tv?

Pretty lame excuse for a movie here. The acting is atrocious, the film is dark and murky so often that you don't know--or care--what is going on half the time. What happened to better lighting? I don't see what the big deal is making these types of "torture wanna be horror" movies. What happened to actually trying to scare people instead of making them want to vomit while watching? I admittedly haven't seen the other films of this type--Saw, Hostel, etc--but if they are anything like this movie, I don't want to.A group of kids arrive in Brazil planning a get away. When the bus they are traveling plunges off a cliff (man, I hate when that happens...) they find themselves stuck in Brazil for some time. They meet some people and decide to stay with some of the locals. They drink themselves silly, and decide that Brazil is better than sliced bread. Little do they know that the drinks are spiked with a little more than vodka. After their raging first night, they wake up to realize they've been drugged and that their possessions are gone. One piece of advice: beware the organ doctors here; they are a rough group, especially Zamora. It gets worse. From here, it is a struggle to find out how to get home, and where they are going, and what is going on. Will they escape the madman doctor? One only knows....The movie tends to drag on and on with each endless and seemingly absurd scene. It seems to be a movie that wants to scream out: "Hey, look at these hot people on this island with a mad doctor! Kind of cool, crazy and scary all at the same time, huh!" Too much fluff, not enough substance. This is a bare bones effort to make a scary movie, but it turns out being a grotesque reality show or something with really beautiful actors and actresses.Do yourself a favor, and go rent a real scary movie instead.

not bad at all

i just saw it online and it was actually quite entertaining. There is an unrated version on DVD and the movie could have been a lot better with those added scenes i guess. They film is quite intense and shocking at times. i give it 3.5 stars out of five. Let me put it this way, there are tons and tons of trashy films out there.... this isn't one of them.

Well Made, edge of your seat tension

This review is from: Turistas (Unrated) (Amazon Instant Video) If you are looking for a good movie that also has some elements of horror and thriller in it then this is the movie for you. If you are a horror movie aficionada and pine for a great movie then you can't go wrong with this one. High budget, good acting, well written. Some real tension in this movie and some unique suspense.

Hilary Clinton is scarier than this movie and I...

.....Hate that woman. This movie is by far the worst of its class. Poor effort on acting and direction. Hostel and Saw are more convincing than this flick. I mean it wasn't scary. Hostel 2 thats comming out is gonna rock better than this film.

Was exciting at some points, but became dull and predictable

This review is from: Turistas (Unrated) (Amazon Instant Video) The acting was good but the storyline was vague and boring as it concluded. I liked some areas of the film which caught my interest but it wasn't long before I just didn't care anymore. I don't recommend this movie for many, but for an OKAY thriller on movie night, maybe.

Surprisingly well done and crafty horror/thriller.

I have been avoiding this film since they first started marketing it asthe next "Hostel." (What a bad plan that was! The movie tanked and thetorture-porn teenagers were furious! HA! Those movies stink anyway...)Anyway, it was only after numerous trusted friends strongly recommendedit that I Flixed it. . . And man-o-man was I pleasantly surprised! Itwas suspenseful and fast-paced without losing the characterization.(Granted, the characters were for the most part cookie cutter, but noone just walked through their roles.) The camera work and lighting was above average too. Great underwaterscenes mixed with mysteriously dark night scenes were a great contrastto the stark daylight of South American beaches. There was a lot ofcare taken to make this film, and I recommend it to anyone who wants tosee a successful thriller with some horrific elements.

Fun!

Regardless of all the talk about Touristas and Hostel, I thought thiswas very entertaining. Love the scenes in the underwater caves! Allaround a darn good time! The acting wasn't too bad and the filminglocation was just beautiful. I really enjoyed the very first scene withthe bus wreck. I thought it was filmed very nicely. I think there werea few holes in the plot, but all around a pretty nice film. KicksDecent in the behind! Acting much better...girls much prettier...andthe cave scenes were much scarier. Not so much camera jiggle! Reallyenjoyed the use of local actors and actresses. Jeez! 10 lines aretough! Have I written enough, yet??

A good and very underrated flick....

I feel I should write a positive review for Turistas because it isgetting a lot of negative comments thrown towards it, and there arehardly any positive comments on this site. First off, I do not get allthe hate to this movie. It's a good movie! Sure, it's not great, butit's really good! Actually entertaining and a lot better than Hostel, which is in my opinion a horrible movie. It is really annoying when Ihear Brazilians in general, slating this movie because it puts a badname on their country. No! It doesn't! There's no need to give thismovie a "1" because it features Brazilians killing tourists...that'snot a reason to hate this movie...that's just being ignorant. The movietakes place in Brazil, that's all. This movie isn't trying to labelevery person in Brazil as poor, a prostitute or people who collectpeople's organs...it really isn't, you shouldn't feel so offended. Thisgoes to all countries, just because a movie may be set in your countryand feature torture etc. doesn't mean it's trying to label your countryas some sort of torture chamber. I mean, most horror movies are set inthe USA, some in UK and Australia too, and you don't hear Americanscomplaining because there seems to be so many serial killers likeLeatherface running around killing people, now do you? Same for Britsand Aussies, I mean -- you don't even hear people in Asia bitchingabout so many ghost stories being set in Asia, claiming the movie makestheir country look like some kind of a "Haunted" country, now do you?Please...just quit with the comments about the movie putting a bad nameon Brazil...it doesn't...and I'm not even Brazilian and I don'tsuddenly think Brazil is full of murderers! The movie has a good, simple plot and has some great performances - particularly from theleads. I am particularly impressed with Melissa George in this moviethough, she's really good in this. The movie has much more of a plotthan Hostel does, and is the better movie -- by far. The movie has aninteresting hour, and then when things start going wrong for thecharacters -- the movie suspense, action, a scene involving someone'sorgans being removed and some great chases! I'll admit, if the moviedidn't have any of that in the last half hour, I would probably havegiven it a lower rating. I really think Turistas is a good movie. It'sentertaining and after just seeing it for the second time, I had towrite a POSITIVE comment on this movie. It's a fun movie, and aninteresting one. Sure it's not the best, but it's far from the worst --far from having such a low rating here on IMDb. If you want to watch anenjoyable 90 minute flick with some nice action, horror and thrills --then watch Turistas, it is worth it. Be prepared for the organ scenethough! Don't listen to all the negative reviews, watch it and see foryourselves!7/10

Not nearly as bad as some have made it out to be

I think it's important to acknowledge that "Turistas" is a viscerally graphic film--not nearly as graphic as the infamous Guinea Pig films but certainly more so than, say, the Friday the 13th films. As such, this film falls into a rapidly growing group of films in which graphic gore is central to the film, often, it seems, the primary reason for the film. Criticizing the film on that ground is, I think, misguided, almost as criticizing musicals for the fact that they have singing is misguided. The relevant question is: Does the movie work given its genre and aims? The answer is mixed. The plot is fairly thin. A group of young adults survives a bus accident on a winding Brazilian road, happens upon a beach with a well-stocked bar, ends up drugged and robbed, and, for reasons the movie does explain, flees to an isolated, albeit luxurious, cabin in the Brazilian mountains. The cabin is owned by the uncle of a local, and the uncle turns out to be the brains and surgical skill behind a string of organ thefts. There are, it must be noted, holes galore in the plot, and the characters are, as so often happens in movies like this, paper-thin. Still, the film is well acted, extraordinarily well shot, and generally suspenseful. It is not, however, frightening. Instead, the graphic nature ends up being more like a filmed autopsy. One may want to look away, but only because the gore is convincing, not because it is frightening. Even so, when one does look, the effects are extremely well done.Where "Turistas" falls flat is precisely where the "Friday the 13th" films fall flat. The characters are so thin and the villain so preposterous that it is difficult to empathize with anyone or think that this really could happen. Maybe, just maybe, we can accept that there are organ thefts. We might also accept the film's premise that there are people who believe Americans (or Westerners in general) are so smug and selfish that they deserve to give up a kidney (or two) and a liver to help the less fortunate. But to have the nefarious doctor engage in a tendentious and pompous explanation of the good his deeds do is downright silly, especially when he is so sadistic as to keep the patient conscious during the organ removal--or at least part of it.But here we return to the gore and the apparent raison d'etre of the film--to showcase extremely well-done effects. And here, "Turistas" succeeds. So we end up with a film in which it is difficult to empathize with the characters or care especially when they die, in which the villain is so absurd that the "it could happen" angle is all but absent, in which there is no particular depth or originality to the plot, but in which the pace (in the second half) and the effects do make the movie passable if not great.

Inventive for its type

Most people disregard 'Turistas' as a mindless, unimaginative, horrorfilm. I am here to interject. After seeing too many horror films tocount, I have come to expect a pretty standard formula embedded ineach. And while the majority of films do follow it, there are theoccasional ones that don't--'The Descent', for example.'Turistas', from the trailer seems that it will be along the lines ofthe countless other teen slasher movies being produced, 'Texas ChainsawMassacre', 'House of Wax', etc... We are led to believe this because ofthe ambiguity of the trailer. Upon viewing the film, however, we learnthe actual intent of the villain is not maliciously driven, but rathereconomically. This seems to take much of the 'scare' out of things. Thevillain, while we obviously don't sympathize with, come off as capable, calm, and calculating, and not some lunatic madman. Everything isrevealed to the audience early on, and nothing is left to theimagination.(Spoilers) The film does seek out creative and innovative ways to 'off' people, but does not rely heavily on gore to do so, but rather, inanti-climatic ways. I first observed this with the Swede girl runningfrom the enemies. She meets her demise in the ironic way of notactually coming into contact with her captors, but rather by runningherself off a cliff. The same can be said for the sister. She iscarefully dissected by the doctor, and while this is scary, it is notgoing for the explosive shock factor like other films. The buildup isrelatively slow, and relatively few of the main characters end updying.(End Spoilers)Now, while this movie obviously merits no substantial attention, it isunique because it refuses to follow most standard set ups for horrorfilms. Perhaps I have seen too many to give an accurate review, buteverything in this film has to be looked at relative to other films ofthe same nature. It is here, that 'Turistas' stands out among theothers, and while it certainly isn't a great film alone, it is a uniquefilm in its category, and certainly doesn't deserve a 2.4 rating onIMDb.

Not so bad : might discourage you from travelling though ;-)

Turistas is compared to Hostel so I was apprehensive about it being"torture porn" relishing on doing sadistic things to poor saps (likeSaw). However, it's not even close in terms of horror and gore. Theworst thing you'll see is an open-heart surgery like you might see inan episode of ER. The unlucky tourist is even anaesthetized so it'sdisgusting but not particularly horrific. That being said, I felt thisfilm strangely compelling and watchable yet far from being great oreven very good. It worked more like a travel/suspense film thanoutright horror. The scenery, all in Brazil, was beautiful. This is thekind of film that might reinforce clichés about the country and hurttourism but they made a point of showing that not everyone andeverything was "evil" and "corrupt" in Brazil. What I found peculiar and nice here is that even the "bad guys",although not very developed character-wise, were not one-dimensionalbaddies. They could have second thoughts and doubts. The actors, especially the women, were quite gorgeous and often scantily clad inbikinis while the acting was very mundane, if not stiff, except for themain "bad guy" who had great presence and a decent motive for hisactions. Another highlight would be the underwater scenes as there areseveral including a fairly long one at the end that was somewhatconfusing (in terms of who was who) yet cool and suspenseful. Searchingfor pockets of airs in flooded caves while being pursued was prettyneat and something I hadn't really seen before. I also liked the endingthat was somewhat unconventional. It would make an OK rental providedyour expectations are not too high.Rating : 5.5 out of 10 (good)

One of those one-watch fun films

Seeing a 5 out of 10 on IMDb almost discouraged me from watching'Paradise Lost' when I saw it on TV, and I'm happy I went against myinstincts and watched it.This movie isn't going to stick in the memory. It's sort of a mixtureof 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'Hostel', but lacks substance fromeither to become its own film. The gore is very minimal, the chasescenes are pretty unimpressive and the characters lack depth. Also, being Brazilian, the story does become incredibly unrealistic (beforeany of the violent bits). However, all this becomes irrelevant for'fun' movies like this.Put it this way, don't buy this movie unless you're a billionaire and afew pounds/dollars is nothing to you. If it's on TV, you won't beunhappy you watched it. I happily saw the movie through to the end.
