Story Line

Plot Summary:

Rachel Keller is a journalist who decides to go undercover on the mysterious death of her niece and her three friends, who seemed to all died on the same day at the same time- 1000 PM. After being told that her niece was found in a closet with a horrifying look on her face, she searches through her room and finds some pictures, pictures of the cabin where her niece and her friends had stayed a week before the deaths. Rachel finds the cabin and finds an unknown video there. She decides to watch it there, and now has only a limited time to live. She and her divorced husband, Noah, research about the video and find facts about Anna Morgan and her daughter, Samara Morgan, the maker of this video. With only a week left, Rachel and Noah discover the unknown secrets of the life of Samara Morgan, and, hopefully for them, a way to break the curse.

Not Bad at all

As one who watches all horror movies, and there are many that areunwatchable, it was a pleasure to sit back and get involved in a mystery/thriller.Some of the visuals managed to stay with me for days afterward, and therewere some truly frightening moments in this movie.I was very pleasantly surprised.

Not Scary....

I can't really take scary movies. They don't even have to be scary.. I'venever been one for "haunting" movies either. After I saw "The Sixth Sense,"I had trouble sleeping for over a month (utterly pathetic, I know). Ithought it was really ironic, then, that everyone found "The Ring" to besoooo frightening. Maybe it is just because I had expected it to be soooscary that I worked myself up for something extraordinarily "scary", butwhen I saw it.. I was left thinking, "well that was kinda stupid..." I meanthe movie was entertaining, and sure, it was suspenseful.. but come on ....a girl walking out of a TV? Really now... "The Ring" is a good movie and it's pretty clever, but for me it didn'treally do it. Didn't have the effect on me that it seemed to on everyoneelse... kinda like "The Blair Witch Project" .. that wasn't as scary as itwas out to be either....

Wow

The ring was cool. Nuff said. Also, the body in the closet, freaky man, freaky. But the acting was cool, the plot was detailed and good, and thechills were felt through out the movie. All and All, one of the freakestmovies ever.

Finally, something that will actually scare you!

This movie has been panned by critics and film-goers alike, mostly for a plot "full of holes" and cheap scares. To me, this says that people are so jaded by the majority of [stuff] that comes out of Hollywood under the genre title "horror" that they don't know good horror when it comes around. To me, this is the Exorcist of my generation; a movie that truly got under my skin, made it hard for me to sleep at night, and even gave me nightmares. First the downfalls - the plot is admittedly thin at points. A lot of people have problems with such but I don't mind giving a suspension of belief in the cases of movies. Where as the Blair Witch Project made it's reputation by making it quite clear what the movie was about, the Ring instead had trailers that let on little, if anything, about the characters or the plot. If you don't know anything about this movie, as I did when I went in, then you're in for a treat. There are the occasional cheap scares (it's quiet then something flies out or something along those lines) but this movie goes deeper than most horror flicks can ever hope to.The acting is very convincing. Probably not Oscar worthy by any means but it'll take you into the story and not let you go until it's over. Everything from the prop creation to set design is dead on - they could film just the sets alone and they'd be creepy. Having never seen the original, Ringu, I can't compare them but the story has a way of tying itself together, weaving a series of seemingly unrelated things together. This probably hasn't been the best review but if you're a fan of horror movies, or just like to be scared, then do yourself a favor and rent this movie, get a friend over, turn off the lights and get ready for a scary experience. Amazingly, this is PG-13 but I don't think kids should see this all; it's not the gore but the haunting imagery that will stick in your mind for weeks later.

scared the living cr@p out of me...

i normally don't get creeped out by "cerebral scary" films as most aren'tintelligent enough to lift a hair. i always leave the theatre disgustedasthe film is dumbed down to the point where any sort of redeemingqualitiesare overshadowed. "Signs" anyone? can you say "spoon-fed ending?" on theother hand, "The Ring" made my skin crawl. every hair on my body isstandingup. i want a warm bath. i want a cup of hot chocolate. i want my mommy.then, i'm renting the original.

More of a mystery

Not the least bit scary, folks! Interesting concept, but found ending abitconfusing. This would be much better classified as suspense/mystery. IfIhad paid theater prices to see it, would have been disappointed. Allsaid,if you liked "Blair Witch Project" you'll enjoy this one.

Nothing can top this movie, it has everything.

I consider myself a horror, thriller, slasher film freak, and don't scareeasly, and this movie did it for me. This movie had everything a personlike me can ever ask for in a movie: scare factor, gore, thought, cameraangles, colors, good plot/story line was interesting, etc... By farbecamean instant classic for me and one of my favorites. A movie I will ownwhenit is for sale. Don't see this movie alone.

A terrifying masterpiece of modern horror

To date, The Ring is the only film that has truly frightened me. No, itdidn't frighten me, it mortified me. It petrified me. It almost made mewalk out of the theater I was so scared. I haven't seen the original, but if they can make a REMAKE of a horror cult classic this good, thenit must be quite the film.So basically the film is about a video tape that kills people a weekafter they see it. Okay, simple enough. I'm sure to many it sounds likeB-horror trash, but it is horror perfection. Literally the first halfhour alone had me covering my eyes I was so scared. This film is doneso perfectly...the acting, the score, and don't even get me started onthe images. Some of those have stuck with me to this day. The finale isgreat, except for that it lead the The Ring Two. Don't even get mestarted on the crappiness that is The Ring Two...you can read myreview.Anyway, The Ring proved to be one of the scariest movies in decades, and I don't think I will ever see another film like it. DO NOT MISS IT.

Fun, scary but silly

Another day, another Hollywood remake and this time its the turn of aJapanese horror classic on the metaphorical chopping block. Its got a coolconcept, it has a cool actress in it (Naomi Watts of Mulholland Drivefame)and a cool trailer. Cool then? Well...Gore Verbinski (sp.?) chooses not to out-gross the audience (a la HalloweenH20) and instead works on our deepest fears- that of the unknown. Oh, and atelevision. Naomi Watts proves she's no flavour of the month with asurprisingly good portrayal of a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown-again. Also there's the inclusion of everybody's favourite late 90s horrorsymbol- a scary looking child. Hmmm, I'm wetting my pants. But honestly, this is a very good scare-'em up. It has you on the edge ofyour seat throughout and you actually (SHOCK! HORROR!) care about thecharacters. The only thing that detracts from the film's appeal is thefinal, silly 30 minutes. I won't give too much away, but the film shiftsfrom horror of the unknown to horror of the surreal. And the audiencelaughs. Not for your kiddies. It'll stay with you, that's for sure...

Terrifying in the wrong sense

Okay, first off, this movie was the kind that kept you terrified for daysbecause it left you wondering so much. This may or may not be a goodthing.Scary movies are supposed to be thrilling, full of suspense, andhorrifying. This film attributed to all three. That is, for me anyway.Though it was just because I thought of it so often. So, you have this mysterious tape that kills people. Alright, I'llbuyit if you can make me BELIEVE it may be possible. This was neveridentified. What? I suppose it's magic? Also if this little girl has somanypowers, why couldn't she ask for help when she was still alive? youknow, like send for the police or something.I think it's just down right rude to for her to kill innocent peoplebecause of her horrific life. I mean, YOU'RE DEAD,GET OVER IT! Come tothink of it, what the hell makes her so special, and able to performthesekind of tricks post mordem? Plus, I never understood whether Samara wasadopted or not. I stepped upon this question while watching the DVD thatenclosed some deleted scenes. One of these scenes encases the reporterquestioning some of the town locals. One of the men stated somethingaboutthe couple leaving town for a while and returning with the Mrs. Morganpregnant. Though if the child was adopted, what makes her so "gifted" andwho where her parents? There, now with my questions, or most of them, laid out on the table Icanget to some complimenting. The movie was unique (not this version in particular, because "Ringu"wasthe original that deserves the credit.) It had thematic elements, greatgraphics, thrilling on-the-edge-of-your-seat scenes, and a good villain(though not a well defined nemesis.) So, if you're the kind of person whodoesn't care for plot, go rent this one. It's good to see with theboyfriend or girlfriend. It has plenty of scenes they'll flingthemselvesupon you from. So, in conclusion I fully agree with the comments of theprevious. Though, of course, I had to satisfy my urge to trash a bit ofthismovie. To be frank, I was disappointed in this film. I felt it had goodpotential, but never filled its quota.

Unraveling of mystery adds to appeal of film

One aspect of this film that I particularly liked was how the maincharacterunravels the mystery: by studying the tape, going to the internet, newspapers, hospital records, the old farmhouse, etc. This was so welldoneso you felt these were real clippings, real records. The photos of thelighthouse, the horses, Ann Morgan, the snippets of text in the articleswere haunting. The music adds to this. This reminds me a bit of"Blowup"where a photo is searched to find a killer. Another eerie investigationtakes place in "Angel Heart". Also in The Shining, Nicholson discoversthehistory of the hotel by looking at old articles in the basement. Theviewerbecomes as obsessed with the history as the characters in the films do.InThe Ring, one is left wanting to see more of the history to explain whathashappened. I could have had another hour or so on this investigation sideofthe film. This was a really classy horror film.

Scarey Nonsense

Supposedly based upon a true story, I found it confusing and much too long. However, it held my interest because the stars whoever they were, were verygood; especially the children. The interesting thing about this movie isthat everytime something scary happens it is accompanied by loud percussion,or some weird musical sound. Inotherwords, the scary sounds come before acalamity. I think the editors could have done a better job; showing us thepriorities in time sequence; not in back clips. This is not a movie forkids under 12!

Boring Boring Boring

What can i say about this movie. i cant say anything except "BORING". Iheard everybody talking about how scary this movie was and theycouldn't answer the phone in a week. So i rented it. I was said tomyself, "Its only a movie. Its only a movie." So i wouldn't get freakedout. Then the movie was over. I was practically asleep. Even ScaryMovie 3 was even scarier. they just spoof the ring. The only part thatsscary in the movie was when Aymara killed that guy. Yawn. I am gettingtired of writing this bad review. So i will close this paragraph upwith a bad review by saying, THIS MOVIE SUCKED!THIS MOVIE SUCKED! THISMOVIE SUCKED! THIS MOVIE SUCKED!

Unanswered Q's

Some of us movie lovers out there will like this film (and I meansome!). Yes Naomi Watts is hot... and yes it does start out welland keeps you intrigued throughout the bulk of the movie. Does itdie off or get weird toward the end? Yes!!! Of course it does! that'show you build for a sequel. That's why there are so manyunanswered questions. If you do some looking around for the original "Ringu" you'll seethat they had to make a sequel to it (seemingly because there isenough story to keep going-I know I want to know more). Maybe forsome the answers don't come easy enough. But for me, thinkingand wondering is part of the experience.Enjoy!

not as creepy as Ringu :-(

High-budget remakes don't always turn out better than their predecessors. And this is a good example. The creepiness from Ringu just didn't transfer very well onto this remake. I'd rather not give away too much detail by explaining why. However, I think one of the reasons that makes The Ring nearly as good as Ringu is that more viewers understand english. Afterall, who likes reading subtitles?

Finally saw it. Good but...

not "the scariest movie of all time." I watched both this and The Exorcistagain and I think The Exorcist is better, but that's because the messageinThe Exorcist is believable. The Ring is a great story, but it's basicallyanextended version of an old wive's tale.

An outstanding film.

I had been waiting for so long for this film. When I found out my localcinema was screening a preveiw I was first in line. I was a little worriedthat I had hyped this film to myself to much........I was notdisappointed. This was without doubt one the most polished films I have ever watched. Iwas gripped from start to end. The direction was outstanding, thestorylinewas first rate and the acting was of a much higher standard than thisgenreusually receives. I cannot recommend this film too much. It was awesome. Ihave never been this scared since the Blair Witch. Go seeit.........class.

Possibly the most scariest movie I have seen.

The Ring is by far more scary then any other movie I have seen. It was soscary I nearly cried. I defently reccomend this for ages 12 and up becauseit WOULD defently frighten young children. The Ring is nothing like TheOthers because this movie has more plot into it, though The Others wasbrilliant. My main point is The Ring takes a lot of concentration tounderstand it. The scary scenes are brilliant and frightening. Plus you evenlaugh after you get scared. See it soon.My Take: 10/10My MPAA rating: PG-13 for intense horrific terror content includingdisturbing images, and for some non-relevent language.

Unbearably tense and creepy

I saw this in theaters with my friends for my fifteenth birthday. Ihadn't seen "Ringu" and I still haven't. The whole time I was watchingit, I thought, "Man, this is creepy!"There are several jump scenes and an overall sense of dread throughoutthe film. It's dark and filled with disturbing imagery. (Possible spoiler) When the teenage girl was found in her closet, thecollective audience screamed and talked for several minutes afterward. When Rachel was in the well near the end, the tension was almostunbearable. It was horrifying. When Samara came out of the TV, I wasn'tshocked, because I had read about it before, but it was fun watchingpeople around me shrink back into their seats and fling their hands infront of their faces. (end spoiler)When I walked out, I thought, "Wow, that wasn't scary at all. Justcreepy."I expected to be terrified when I got home late at night, but I didn'tthink about it. Sometimes the images would pop into my head in theshower or at night, but that's about it. What I'm trying to say in thiscrappy review is that it's worth watching, for it certainly has aneffect on the viewer. It might not terrify you, but I'm sure you'llremember it.

creepy. just creepy.

i went and saw the film on whim not really expecting much since it is ahorror movie. the trailer didn't give too much away, so i was left in thedark, sort of. i regret that i saw the movie alone. from the very firstframe i had this eerie creeped-out feeling which i owe to the unbelievablecinematography. the film kept this gloomy appeal until the very end. themusic was hardly noticeable until the credits, which is unusual in horrorfilms. the horror genre relies so much on the score hitting dramatic pointsin the film, but like i said it's all in the way the film is shot. when ilook back on the plot, it's completely absurd and doesn't make a whole lotof sense, but looks amazing on screen. after seeing the movie i wasthoroughly disturbed and didn't sleep a whole lot that night, but i've toldeverybody about the movie. just see it and you will be completely creepedout.
