Underrated and Fairly Funny.Rated PG-13 for language, rude dialogue and some violence QuebecRating:G Canadian Home Video Rating:14A(should be PG)I just saw The Man on the movie network. This movie came and went intheaters but it had Samuel L Jackson in it and it seemed funny so Idecided to check this film out.Samuel L Jackson is a great actor andthis film is no exception. His acting is good.So is Eugene Levy's.Thestoryline is okay but this film does have some very funny moments andthe chemistry between Samuel L Jackson and Eugene Levy was good.Thisfilm is about a cop who must team up with a salesman who talks too muchin order to get revenge on the weapon dealers who killed hispartner. The Man is a fairly funny film and I think its a good rental.Runtime:83min8/10 |

Good to rent or see on TV...I sat down in front of my TV and turned to HBO and "The Man" happenedto be starting at that moment. I needed two hours to pass, so I watchedit.I was pleasantly surprised. The idea to put Eugene Levy and Sam Jacksonin a movie together was a clever one. They bounce off each otherperfectly. The jokes in the movie range from farting humor to EugeneLevy explaining that the human bite is very painful (which I foundfunny). I found the film to be above average funny. The film's humor and suspense are abundant enough to keep you watchingthe whole 83 minutes. It is definitely a great movie to watch just toburn time.7/10. |

A pleasant surprise after all the bad hypeI actually had free tickets to this film but forwent using them afterseeing the terrible write-ups: Tired buddy film; Samuel Jacksoncouldn't look more bored... etc. In contrast, after finally renting it,I found it to be a very entertaining film with roles that seemed to fitthe actors like a favorite chair. If Jackson looked bored it wasbecause his character was bored -- alive but not living -- and Jacksonpulled it off very well. Many people here have referred to it as arip-off buddy-film but I wonder if they aren't just buying into thedime-a-dozen reviews; or perhaps they are buddy-film connoisseur's andhave some authority on it all when actually this movie deserves to beseen for itself. Personally, I can't call this a buddy film since theywere not buddies in any sense of the word. More like Shaft meets FelixUnger. As well, there seems to be a consensus that there was a lot ofbathroom humor. I think the fart scenes could have been left out, although the first is an almost a deserved scene to accentuate theburned out bad boy and over the top good boy irony; and the cavitysearch seemed totally unnecessary and basically out of character forthe movie or at least out of place except the director feltuncomfortable with any "aww"s certain scenes might have evoked.Beyond that, Les Mayfield was using slapschtick humor, and the lot ofthem -- Jackson, Levy, Goss and Mayfield, seemed to pull it all offwith an almost Buster Keaton style; the epitome of poker-faced comedywhereby the humor is delivered in a brown paper bag instead of a piñataspewing candy all over you (or worse, a pie in the face).Levy is perfect as the bumbling salesman whose dreams peak at the hopeof having a standing ovation for his presentation on the latestdentistry tools in his text-book nerd attire and over-indulgence inself-obsessed righteousness; while Jackson is impeccable as the rougeuntrusting, seen-too-much undercover agent rotely implementing hisdown-to-a-science head-banging and snitch chasing, which brings purposeto his life but of which the passion and excitement of it all eludehim. While the entertainment value lies squarely in the interactionbetween these two polar opposites, there is a not so subtle gaining ofqualities from each to the other. Great performances from a fabulouscast for this silly and enjoyable caper. |

FunnyI wasn't expecting a lot from this movie other than a laugh, and itsucceeded. Yes, there were dump parts to the movie, but I continued tolaugh throughout the entire movie.Samuel Jackson plays his usual tough cop wanting to solve the crime. Eugene Levy as the salesman is very convincing. Even I wanted to tellhim to shut-up! Putting the two together creates a very funny duo allthe way to the final moments of the movie. There is profanity, but Levy gives Samuel Jackson a cute lesson on howto avoid using the "F" bomb. Along with other "life" lessons thatJackson needed to be reminded of. |

The conventionWhen Andy Fiddler, a man whose business is dental supplies, decides toattend the annual convention in Detroit, little prepares him for theadventure he is going to be involved, for being at the wrong place, atthe wrong time. Andy, who happens to be in a coffee shop, minding hisown business, has the unexpected pleasure to meet a low life guydealing in illegal gun trafficking.Detective Van, whose partner has been killed, is being investigated byInternal Affairs. The dead man was involved in the scam, as AgentPeters from that department tells Van, who is an honest man. Fatebrings him and Andy Fiddler together, as Van wants Andy to work withhim solving the case.Les Mayfield, the director, shows a knack for making "The Man" anunexpected pleasure. He was blessed in pairing two different actorsthat make the movie even better. Samuel L. Jackson, an intense actor, and Eugene Levy, the comic genius, make one of the happiest appearancesin a movie in quite some time. The material has a lot of laughs. Thebonding of the two men is what makes the picture work. Miguel Ferrer isseen as the agent in charge of the investigation of Van. The excellentSusie Essman, long associated with Larry David, plays a policelieutenant in charge of Van.The movie at 83 minutes running time, packs a lot of surprises. LesMayfield, no doubt, will go to bigger and better things in the future. |

Tired and LameThe characters played by Levy and Jackson are thin retreads and the production values are nonexistent. None of this would matter, of course, if there was a reasonably coherent story. |

The Man Is a Must See Comedy and a 5 Star DVDThis by far is one of the funniest comedies I have ever seen in my life. That may seem like an over statement to most because they might have not heard of the movie but it is a must pick up. It has Samuel L Jackson and it features him on a goose chase to catch criminals. He meets up with a guy referred to as the man in this movie and he is there to make a presentation about teeth but he gets pulled into the chase as well. Funny differences between the man and Samuel L Jackson as he is the white nerdy man and Jackson is the serious officer. They start out not liking each other but then become friends near the end of the movie. A great amount of comedy and action that makes the movie mix very well. I know you won't have heard of this it was made a few years ago and wasn't a huge project but if you ask for it at FYE or best buy they should have it and for a good price. The movie runs well at an hour and a half but could have been a little longer. Overall great movie and 5 stars if you ask me. |

The Funniest Comedy of the Year In My OpinionOK, I know I'm gonna take fire from people on this site for saying thisbut I found this to be funnier than Wedding Crashers and 40 Year OldVirgin combined and personally will be putting this up there with myall time favorite comedies. Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy star inthis film about a federal agent (Jackson) who teams up with a dentalsupplies salesman (Levy) because a major robbery involving automaticweapons just occurred the night before which led to his dirty partnerbeing killed and an Internal Affairs director connecting the agent tohis partner's murder. So the rest of the film involves Jackson bringingLevy along for the ride do to the fact that Levy is mistaken for beingthe undercover agent that will bust the bad guys in this case a groupof British gun running killers. The last time I laughed this hard whileat the movies was for 50 First Dates over a year and a half ago so thiswas a breath of fresh air to go see a comedy that didn't appeal tohormone crazy adults or teenagers for that matter but instead appealedto the average action movie fan like me. The best scenes of the movieare the flatulence jokes, the pool scene, and the he's my bitchsequence towards the end. So I can say whole heartedly that I lovedthis movie and will be buying this on DVD when it comes out and thatpeople looking for good solid laughs for only a short period of timeshould definitely run and check this out. P.S. Everyone who says thisis a terrible movie and not funny obviously has an agenda against thismovie for some reason and has no wide sense of humor. |

IT'S OKAY!!!!!Why did this movie get such savagely bad reviews? I rented it with the full expectation that I would hate it, that it would be a non-stop barrage of stupid jokes. Not true. The plot is decent and there are funny lines thrown in appropriately without going overboard. Levy and Jackson work well together. Sure, it is a formula "buddy picture" from start to finish, but it was good, not bad. |

Funny! This review is from: The Man (DVD) A very funny movie. Samuel L Jackson does a great job playing a tough cop alongside an innocent, "Mr. Clean" type of guy who gets thrown in with him. Both men learn a lot! |

The Man (DVD)This year has been a bizarre year for movies. It literally has some of the best and worst things I've seen in a while. The year started off rocky, but things really picked up during the summer. While there may be fewer five-star movies out there, this summer was a great time to see some really good films. However, once Labor Day passes, we pass into the doldrums of the fall. Kids are back in school, so there are fewer of them at the multiplex. The big summer blockbusters have all been released, and the holiday films are still several months away. Same goes for the Oscar nods that tend to flood the market in the winter. Some say that late August and early September are the darkest days for movies, and that's usually true. It certainly was for the last few weeks with movies like "A Sound of Thunder" and "The Cave" stinking up the joint. I had little confidence that "The Man," a fish-out-of-water buddy cop movie starring Eugene Levy and Samuel L. Jackson, was going to be different. In fact, I said to a friend before seeing it, "This has `suck' written all over it." However, as I was watching the movie, something strange happened... I started laughing. Does this mean that "The Man" is a great movie? No. It doesn't even mean it was a good movie. It just made me laugh. The movie itself is beyond preposterous. Eugene Levy plays a dental equipment salesman who stumbles into an arms deal orchestrated by an ATF officer played by Samuel L. Jackson. They're stuck together as a bickering couple until they can bring down the bad guys. The stars play exactly to type. Eugene Levy reprises the roles he played in films like "American Pie" and "Waiting for Guffman." Samuel L. Jackson gives us the honest cop take on his character Jules from "Pulp Fiction." But they're both so good at these stock characters that it brings a bizarre level of charm to the movie. It's what "Pulp Fiction" would have been if Eugene Levy had been cast as Vincent Vega instead of John Travolta. Not really a good idea, but still funny. Is it predictable? Yes. Does it have juvenile humor throughout it? Yes. Is the story as flimsy as wet tissue paper? Absolutely. It is everything that all the other critics are going to complain about. But like the gorgeous Jessica Rabbit once told a cynical private investigator as to why she loved her freaky little husband. He made her laugh. Never underestimate the power of laughter, people. It's what made the fat, bald Curly Howard a huge ladies man. Ultimately, you can't take this movie too seriously. In some ways, this film is as much of a spoof of the buddy-cop formula as it is a serious attempt to make another "Lethal Weapon" or "Rush Hour." I wouldn't expect Levy and Jackson to become cinema icons like the famous comedy duos Laurel & Hardy or Abbot & Costello. They're more like the less-famous comedy duo of Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. They do put on a good show... as long as you're not expecting something great. |

I laughed till my sides hurt! This has to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen! The entire theater was laughing almost the entire time. I am a white, middle aged woman, my husband is in his late fifties, the woman sitting next to me was in her late 70's and the person she came with was in his 20's. We all thought the movie was very entertaining. Eugene Levy's ability to be so funny with such a straight face, how did Samuel L. Jackson not start laughing through the seens? Oh, I am sure they have some hilarious outtakes. You will never understand the statement "I ate red meat" until you see this movie. If you are going for some serious drama because of Samuel L. Jackson, forget it. If you are going for an entertaining, funny movie, then go see THE MAN! |

Not That Bad......I fould it to be very funny I mean sure that is no story but who cares it's fun to Jackson doing a comdey for once I mean okay the other actors suck but it does not stop this movie from being funny.I know that the movie has alot of crude hummor in it and I like that kind of stuff but for those of you who want a funny and clever movie then go look somewhere else but for those of you who want to have a good time then go out and buy The Man. |

The Man is a great film.I thought the movie was brilliant. Even though the language was a bitmuch, I felt that it was a film that everyone could enjoy. The absenceof nudity and sexual contonations was refreshing, and the combinationof Levy and Jackson was great.Today when all everyone is looking for is rough humor, sex and horror, this movie was refreshing. Although the part of his (Vann's) family wasa side track his daughter was just a cutie. It helped to bring abalance to both of the characters. It made them believable versusHollywood. I have seen the film twice already and plan on going again.I would say go see this movie without preconceived notions of what youthink the actors should be. If you do I guarantee you will come outhaving enjoyed it. |

Works in doses, but mainly dead on arrivalOh Sam, when will you learn that your Pulp Fiction Oscar nomination wasnot a fluke? It seems like you took that loss to Martin Landau so hard, that all you do is parody your bad ass image every chance you get.Yeah, it was a silly loss, but so are about 90% of the other Oscarwinners. It was a loss you could have picked up from, like RalphFiennes after the Tommy Lee Jones disaster the year before. Had youlearned this by now, we may have seen something that's up to par withJules Winnfield. Instead, we get half-baked characters like DerrickVann in The Man.The film runs for just over a very dragged out 80 minutes, andbasically is about a case of mistake identity. Guns have been stolenfrom a police precinct in Detroit, and the gunrunners are likely tosell them within the first 24 hours of getting them. Enter Andy Fiddler(Eugene Levy). He's a dental supplies salesman, and he walks into acoffee diner, and ends up being mistaken for the buyer of the guns byone of the gunrunners. He gets "a taste", and ends up getting picked upby Vann, and used in the case to try and nab these guys.Of course, from the trailer, you just had to know this movie was notgoing to be that great. Levy and Jackson work as a comedic pair topoint, but the film is just mostly Jackson cursing at him, and notreally showing off his actual acting that we know he can pull off. Andfor a PG-13 rated film, Jackson is able to use quite a variety oflanguage. Levy does try his best in this role, but it just lacks anycharm that he's shown in past performances, and he just looksfrightened for most of the film. The story goes here and there, and zig-zags to its eventual finale. Ithas an assortment of extra plot points that really serve no purpose, but helps make the film feature length. If they were excised, thiseasily would have been a hilarious short film. Instead, it's a boringcomedy with the occasional dose of hilarity. Jackson and Levy can onlydo so much before the film falls down all around them. The supportingcast just makes little to no attempt at making their characters morethan one dimensional, and make even less an attempt to make the filmgood. They know they are working with bad material, but instead ofmaking the best of it, they just help drag it down even more. Thevisual style nor the editing is anything to jump up and down about.Yes, there a few stylish scenes, but only a few. The rest is justtotally forgettable. We've seen this all before, and there's almost nothing original thatcomes out of it. This is standard issue, weak buddy comedy. The pairingof Jackson and Levy could have made something come out of it, butunfortunately, does not. It misses the mark from the start, and justcannot pick up the pace as the film continues. If you're looking for alight laugh, the film may work in doses. But otherwise, it just is deadon arrival.5/10. |

Mwaaah...I really like Samuel Jackson movies. But this one was not good, not badeither. It's about a cop whose partner gets killed while he isundercover buying some guns. Samuel wants to find out who killed hispartner and sets a meeting with the boss in a café. Unfortunatelysomeone else gets into his place, a dentist. So he has to take thedentist everywhere with him to get the killer. When the movie begins and you can see Samuel and the dentist don't likeeach other at all, you already know they will become buddies at theend. The jokes or humor in the movie was average, the most good jokewas at the end, I really liked that one! But to see a 1,5 hour movieonly to watch a good joke is a waste of your time. There was a flaw in the movie. At the moment the dentist is in thecafé, he doesn't know there is a gun in the bag the killer gave him.Somewhere in the middle Samuel gets pictures shot in the café, but Ididn't see a photographer in the beginning of the movie shooting thosepictures. The barman did not have a camera... |

The best film ever made? This movie changed my life. Never before have I witnessed such adramatic piece with intricate plot lines developed so well. Withremarkable performances from some of the finest actors of ourgeneration, including Luke Goss from the Grammy award winning groupBROS. Samuel L Jackson portrays a desperate cop in the role of hiscareer and Euegen Levey was truly robbed of an Oscar with his subtleand captivating portrayal of a dentist in a neck brace. If you pass up on the opportunity to go and see or rent this movie thenyou may aswel end your life or perhaps consider perpetual hibernationfor you are passing up the opportunity to have your life changed. WhenI first saw this movie I gave up the notion of a superior creator anddecided that the Man should be the biblical celluloid that dictates mylife and takes me to places I never thought possible. Also in the film you get to hear Eugene Levey call samuel L Jackson abitch and for that alone you must do what ever you can to helpyourselves and others to view this work of magnificence. The Man. |

This Was A Unexpected TreatWhy can't Eugene Levy make more films like this instead of that American Pie crap? This paring with Samuel Jackson was an escape into comic genius! I can see a very strange, and hopefully as funny, sequel in the future. Better tha so many other wannabe films in this genre! You will not be dissapointed! |
