Shallow & pointless

I just finished watching the movie & it was the most boring, unauthentic movie i've watched in a long time. The main charactersstumble from one unbelievable scenario into the next one, Luke Wilson'srole always behaves strange and/or totally wrong & stupid (just to keepthe pointless story running) & the dialogs are shallow and far-fetched.To me both actors seemed unmotivated, Samuel L. Jackson's performanceas the bad guy cannot be compared to the ones in "Lakeview Terrace" or"Unthinkable", Luke Wilson's performance is far worse.I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone, if you want to see somethingsimilar, watch "Mr. Brooks".

Movie is good for what it shows about human nature

Although there is a plot line to this movie that is very interesting,it is really more about the horror of what people do to each other, especially the ones they love. If you notice the references in themovie to poor lifestyle practices that we encourage within each otherand teach to our children, you will get the real message. Notice:drinking early in the day, chastising the kids when they startle uswith a surprise, over-eating (multiple references) huge bowls of craftdinner, processed foods, extra gravy, greasy food, smoking despiteknowing how bad it is for us, slovenly life-styles, poor hygiene,sugar-coated everything, extra-marital affairs, all these things thepolice cannot protect us from. This is the real meaning of this movie.Well worth watching because it is wrapped up in a very entertainingmovie if you like murder and mayhem.

Terrible bad

Not even Samuel L. Jackson could save this movie. His acting is good the rest of the characters are just plain awful Imean I get the feeling they are acting and thinking to them selves"what the heck am I saying this has no point and it's lame".The scenes flow doesn't make sense at all, nothing gets to beexplained. The ending gives a little insight but doesn't really makesup to it.This is that kind of horror movies where there is no blood and everytime there's a killing scene they just make a camera shoot outside andyou ear the screams. Every movie I saw with this drama technique isalways a waste of time.I gave it a 4 because o Samuel L. Jackson and the two hot girls ;) andthe shooting style, other than that it's just plain boring disconnectedscenes and story...

Awful Movie!

*May contain spoilers* The story line was just awful! Some guy shows upto this fellows home and tricks him into pushing his car all for thesake of kidnapping the fellow. Somehow the engine backfires and burnshis leg. The guy gets in a car with a complete stranger. They drive around and go to a gas station where the kidnapper murders everyone inthe store. SERIOUSLY! This movie is stupid!I don't even know how thewriter/director of this movie convinced Samuel Jackson to play in thismovie. It was terrible! I don't know what else to say other than thiswas an awful movie with a terrible plot. I wouldn't recommend you wasteyour time watching this movie.

A good powerful performance from Samuel L. Jackson

Firstly I must say that the entire first half of the film keptreminding me of Collateral just with a switch of Tom Cruise to SamuelL. Jackson. Now as far as the film is concerned the plot was veryfamiliar to me, I have seen it before but then again what haven't I sawbefore. For it's rather simple plot basis you come to expect somepretty good acting throughout, if you are looking for a complexthriller with twists & turns you may not like it, it's all about theacting. Now for the action and basic thrills of the film, they doenough to deliver the viewer a decent portrayal of good guy(Wilson)caught in the web with a very dangerous man named RICHIE (S.L.Jackson).As the film starts Wilson's character named JOHN is literally havingTHE WORST DAY of his life, his career has gone down the toilet & ifthat isn't bad enough he comes home to see a foreclosure note on thefront door of his beautiful dream home plus he also has two youngchildren to take care of. Then right about when I would be downing ahandful of Valium he gets on knock on his door and there stands goodold Samuel L. on his door step dressed in a nice suit & hat to boot andhis evil presence is felt immediately, plus we know him from hislengthy film career as one real bad son of a @itch. His power andpresence is tremendous for every minute. Sadly, what happened to him earlier is just the starting point of aneven worse day for this poor devastated man John. Then with a hardknock on john's door stands Jackson's character Richie arriving at hishouse complaining of car trouble, asking for a push to pop the clutchbecause he said it was running on fumes. One thing led to another &before you know it Wilson's character is barreling down the highwaywith Jackson at the wheel. The events that occur for the rest of thefilm let's say are pretty interesting to say the very least. Though hedoesn't know it yet John is in for the ride of his life. I know that alot of viewers have seen this plot before, it's been done countlesstimes over the years, but with the right writing and convincingcharacters you could provide the needed electricity to entertain youfor the run time The acting from Jackson was what made this a good film, I couldn'tthink of another actor I would want to take his place It's a solid 7/10partly because the production & cinematography were excellent, Ienjoyed the camera work quite a bit. As for the conclusion of the filmI was slightly surprised at the end though there was many subtle hintsthrown at the audience all throughout the film. I am guessing that thisisn't going to have a theater showing, due to the plot & not enoughbeef for Hollywood to embrace. So many films during 2011 that I thoughtwere amazing went to VOD, I would like to see exactly what criteriathey use, whether it's private screenings or what? Anyway again I callthis a 7/10

Now That We've Met, Perhaps You Can Tell Me What You Want

I'm sure that "Meeting Evil" is a lot of things. If only I knew whatthey were. What I can say is that the film is not boring; you'reinvolved with it from the very first frame to the last. Unfortunately,it's next to impossible to tell what you're involved in, be it a crimedrama, a psychological thriller, a biting commentary on Americansociety, a supernatural horror story, a religious fable, or somebizarre combination of all of the above. Adapted from the novel byThomas Berger, the film seems at odds with itself, trying to send amessage while at the same time keeping it at arm's length from theaudience. This is surely one of the most frightening and stylishunsolvable puzzles I've come across in quite some time. I'd recommendit, except I don't really know what I'd be recommending.I can easily describe the sequence of events, but I don't think I cansay what it's actually about. A realtor named John Felton (Luke Wilson)has just been fired. The timing could not be worse; his credit cardpayments are past due, and his picturesque house is in foreclosure. Hekeeps this from his wife, Joanie (Leslie Bibb), who, along with theirson and daughter, unsuccessfully attempts to surprise him with a cakeand candles. She leaves with her children, saying that they're going tothe park. John pours himself his second glass of scotch. The doorbellrings. John opens the door and finds a man in a neat black suit andfedora standing there. This would be Richie (Samuel L. Jackson). Hesays his car has stalled and that it needs a push. John offers to help.As John pushes, Richie sees to it that his car backfires on John's leg.Seemingly apologetic, Richie offers to take John to the hospital. Butfirst, they stop at a gas station. Richie is met at the window by arude young woman who chews gum like a horse. Richie goes inside theconvenience store for a minute, then gets back into the car. Ratherthan continue to the hospital, he drives John to a local bar, wherehe's offered a drink. Before entering, John goes across the street to acell phone store, where the overweight cashier wolfing down on donutsrefuses to let him make a local call. John goes back to the bar andruns into his arrogant former boss. Richie suggests that they bothteach him a lesson. John thinks it would be better to just let it go.Richie disappears for a minute. Just as John is about to leave, he runsinto his former lover, Tammy (Peyton List). Richie returns, claiming tohave also paid a visit to the cell phone store.Richie's car has been towed away, as he parked in a handicapped spot.John becomes the designated driver in Tammy's car, Tammy being just alittle too tipsy to drive herself. On the road, John is nearly run overby an insane truck driver, who slams the breaks, gets out, and is readyfor a confrontation. Richie, taking control of the situation, gets thebehind the wheel and proceeds to ram directly into the truck driver, spattering the windshield and the asphalt with his brains. It's at thispoint we discover that everyone in the convenience store lies dead inpools of their own blood. John eventually picks up on this. Richieseems to be daring John to do something about it, rather than walk awaylike he always does. And so begins a killing spree, one that the policesoon pick up on. Not surprisingly, John becomes their primary suspect.Meanwhile, a little girl stands in a field with her dog. When thepolice arrive, she flips them off.Exactly who is Richie? A serial killer? The Devil incarnate? He seemsto know an awful lot about John, despite the fact that personalinformation was never shared. All we really know about him is that he'sevil. He would argue that the world is evil, and that he's killingpeople who are already dead. Ultimately, he's about as impenetrable asall the characters in this film. The most frustrating is Joanie, who ina split second transitions from doting housewife to confrontationalfirebrand. When she's being questioned by a police deputy, for example, she unleashes a quiet yet powerful stream of insults. What makes thescene even more mysterious is that she has both her children present, and she covers her son's ears before letting the deputy have it. Herreasoning: She wanted to teach her daughter how to defend herself andhave her son remember how a man should speak to a lady.Accusations of affairs and other indiscretions are introduced into theplot without ever being followed through. And yet we wait in sheersuspense for the inevitable moment when Richie reenters John's life, this time with Joanie present. In terms of physicality, it climaxespretty much as we expect it to. In terms of theme or resolution, we'releft with an entirely new series of questions. What is the messagehere? That we must stand up for ourselves in a society of rudegluttons? That the people we love may or may not be who we think theyare? The more I try and process "Meeting Evil," the bigger my headachegets. I honestly don't know whether to marvel at or be furious with thefilmmakers for making something so narratively difficult yet sostylistically absorbing.-- Chris Pandolfi (www.atatheaternearyou.net)

Look beyond production value and enjoy this excellent movie!

Can't you tell that these are the movies that the actors get to havethe most fun with? I love it when an actor can be honest with himselfand go beyond that by exploiting their obvious stereotype.. In thiscase with Samuel L. he is playing on the fact that he can play amentally disturbed black man just as well or better than Denzel in"Training Day" - Beyond that its not a competition they are differentblack men and thus each brings his own style to the type of characterportrayed...It's short and entertaining throughout. This movie is not better than training day. Thus movie entertained me more than most trash that comes out thesedays...

So bad I stopped watching to write this

I don't think I have seen a film as bad as this since 24hr photo shopor whatever it was called with Robin Williams in it. A far fetched plotis one way of putting it, absolute (can you use swear words on thissite) bull**** is more precise. John (Luke Wilson) is a total pussy andnot very good at acting it either. Richie (SLJ) is a very scary lookingdude who for some reason John trusts and wants to hang out with until'oh nooooooooooooo' he realises it's too late. If you find the rules of tick tac toe difficult or believe gullible hasbeen taken out the dictionary you might get enjoy this film, even findit a little scary and tense at times. But if you can read, which youobviouly can unless you're listening to someone else read this to you, you'll have half a brain and be shocked at the poor directing, editing, music choice, story line,.....list goes on. In summary It's a bit likea zombie film but instead of the zombies being the things you findweird and 'just too fictional' it is the humans. So bad it's nearly brilliant..... nearly being a million miles, sorrySamuel mate.....

Brilliant thriller

I thought this film was a great thriller, if like me you love thrillersthen this is a great watch. Samuel L Jackson played a great role as akiller and he looked the part too with great facial expressionsthroughout,He was ruthless and did not give a beep, you know what imean lol not too gory if you don't like all the blood and guts, butenough blood and guts for even my grandmother to watch. Luke Wilsonplayed a good role too but i felt he could of done a little bit better, maybe that would be up to the writers of the film though? anyway all inall it was a great film, ignore any bad reviews of it, if you likethrillers and Samuel L Jackson then you will like this film.

Well worth the ride.

When I first went into watch this film, i was expecting it to beanother Samuel L. Jackson Changing Lanes sequel. But a surprisinglyconvincing effort from the rest of the cast(Luke Wilson, Leslie Bibb),helped turn this movie into a great thriller. I haven't seen Seen SLJplay such a deep role since Black Snake Moan. In the film, Luke Wilsonplays a Middle Aged man that has just lost everything, and accidentallymeets Samuel L. Jackson who needs help starting his car. What startsout as a seemingly random course of events, turns out to be somethingmuch more sinister. Anyway if you watch this,I guarantee you will agreethat it was well worth the ride!

I saw it n still dnt believe i did

Well, what was I expecting from a movie directed by Chris Fisher? Whowas the guy behind the S. Darko (sequel to Donnie Darko) which is oneof the worse sequel ever made.Don't expect anything from this waste of reel, based on a novel (don'tquote me), but totally resembling Collateral (Jamie Foxx and TomCruise) only less interesting, and less captivating. There is nothingto hold on to in this movie as one thing I liked. Since Samuel actedlike he usually did when he is acting bad guys and Luke acted like heneeded the money and was neither interested nor concerned about whatwas going on.Leslie Bibb (Zookeeper) actually acted better than both Samuel and Lukeput together, and the plot is just as lame as they come, as it madeLuke's character look like a retard that will do anything you tell him. There were some gore scenes in the movie, but it was few; so even ifthat was something the public wanted to see sorry go see SAW instead. If you are a Samuel L. Jackson fan and will see anything he does, stayaway from this miss hit. The plot says Samuel is a serial killer andLuke was supposed to be a victim and then turned apprentice (not thathe didn't try to escape). As the plot plays out we get drag down aboring road of killings and dull dialogues.(Spoiler Alert) If you think I haven't finished in the plot sorrythat's it, Samuel goes killing and drags Luke with him and at the endthe bad guy dies. All in all, if you have not heard of this movie or have not seen it,just be happy.

Rutger L Jackson

I hope Samuel L Jackson isn't heading for B movie hell - first Fury andnow this. Thing is he still has a performance in him , given thescript. Meeting Evil isn't it. The character he plays (Ritchie) doesleave many unanswered questions which can be a good thing. He on afeeble premise "accidentally" meets up with Luke Wilsons recently firedproperty salesman, having as we learn later allegedly been hired tokill Wilson. At first he plays mind games with Wilson but soon goes ona killing spree dragging Wilson and the woman he is having an affairwith along for a bloody road trip.Wilson plays the world weary dog tired role a little too well. Someonewake him from his slumber. For so long in the movie he is so wellmannered and willingly compliant to Jacksons every demand even whenevents begin to spiral out of control. Hard to believe. There is an element of Rutger Hauers' The Hitcher in the Jacksoncharacter and as unfortunately we do not actually see the murders (onlysome of the corpses) i thought there may be some quasi supernaturalelement to the story. Wrong!.In trying fathom why the Ritchie characteracted like he did i did detect misogyny in his persona. Although notselective in his murder victims, comments he makes during the movie andthe goading of Wilson tempting him to kill his own unfaithful wife leadme to this conclusion. But its only a theory. The last 15 minutes didmanage to ratchet up some tension but the film is hindered by lowbudget, poor script, a lack of gore and rubbish support acting (especially the actor/actress playing the two detectives).

A tense & gripping movie that will have you guessing till the end. Sam Jackson plays same guy as usual but it works. I say B+

"The world hurts people John, I come in after the hurt. All I do iskill people who are already dead." John (Wilson) is having a bad day.He didn't sell the house he wanted and lost his job. Just when hethinks it can't get any worse Richie (Jackson) shows up and asks forhelp with his car. Soon he becomes involved in a murderous rampage thathe can't escape from. I have to start by saying that I am not a big SamJackson fan at all. To me he really can't act and plays himself inpretty much every movie he does. That said it really works in thismovie. Wilson is good as a weak willed man taken in my Jackson's fasttalking character. This is a movie where you feel tense almost theentire time and that feeling adds to the excitement of the movie. Themovie kept me guessing the entire time and actually had a little twistat the end that I was not expecting. This movie is a littleunbelievable but that doesn't hurt the movie at all. I wasn't sure whatto expect from this going in and I was very surprised at how much Iliked it. Overall, a tense and exciting thriller that is very muchworth watching. I liked it. I give it a B+.

Weird movie.

Weird movie - and not in a good way. I really wanted to like thismovie, which probably never helps, but the story and characterbehaviors are so far-fetched it kinda ruined it for me. I had not read the book, so Sam's character made me wonder about hismotives etc which kept me interested to the end. The acting is solid but the editing seemed a bit off. It felt like adirect-to-DVD on production value for some reason. Not the worst movie but I can't really recommend it with so many otherbetter movies out there. Keep your expectations low if you're gonna seeit.

fairly average until the end

I'll be honest, I was fairly unimpressed with this movie for most ofit. It runs through a fairly standard, formulaic plot progression, similar in many ways to the hitcher. The ending builds up and seems on track for the standard ending whensuddenly something flips, and for the last 10 minutes I was impressedthat I had underestimated the whole thing. This movie originally seems like it could contain more than it does, but then it turns out to be fairly normal , only to then flip it aroundand add a lot more depth. not a brilliant movie, by any stretch, but performances , even thoextreme, should entertain. I would normally rate this as an averagemovie, but the ending pulls it up a point.

Filet mignon left out overnight

This movie is pretty cool until the end. Samuel L. Jackson gives awonderful performance. He and Luke Wilson have great chemistrytogether. You are terrified by Samuel L Jackson the entire time andexpect him to turn out to be the devil or something. He's just thatcreepy and nonchalant about everything.Great acting, good mystery and suspense, but the ending flubs it up.It falls into the B movie category and doesn't deserve any more than a4 rating.SPOILER ALERT Sadly to say, Samuel L. Jackson is not the devil, he is a run of themill hit-man sent by his wife to kill Luke Wilson. With the kind ofperformance Samuel L. Jackson turns in and the kind of listlessattitude he has toward relentless murders, one would expect a greatermore evil outcome. But no, he is just a hit-man who for some reasonmurders people all over the place with no regard for human life. Acommon hit-man just doesn't fit the bill. And there is no mystery as to whether or not he was a hit-man, if youwatch the movie from beginning to end, you will remember what happensin the beginning that references this fact.Booooooo.

Great Cast, Decent Plot, Horrible Execution

This movie has one of my personal favorite actors, Samuel L. Jascksonin it. As well as Luke Wilson, another actor I enjoy. These two take upthe majority of screen time and there's familiar faces of decent actorsthroughout the rest of the film. Beyond the on screen talent the plotis a decent one to work with. Without giving too much away I'll sayit's a familiar plot of one man meeting another man who slowly turnshis life into a nightmare. Where this movie fails and the reason it's a straight toDVD/BluRay/Netflix, etc. instead of a 9 million dollar nation widerelease is purely in the movies execution. When you can't blame theacting and you can't blame the script then the finger must get pointedat the man behind the camera. In this case it's Chris Fisher, directorof ever worsening straight to DVD/BluRay/Netflix, etc. movies andaverage to bad TV shows peaking with the horrible SyFy series Warehouse13. While I won't go so far as to say this movie is as bad as thehorrid movies SyFy is responsible for, it did at times seem like abadly filmed lifetime movie. The actors and script were also at timesworse than a SyFy movie. Specifically when Luke Wilson comes home andconverses with his wife at the beginning of the movie. I cringedbecause I knew Luke Wilson was a better actor than that. While not a complete waste, this movie is watchable but by no means isit one that you should go out of your way not to miss.4 of 10 - There were good actors giving lacking, and at times badperformances. All in a movie with a decent plot but bad and at timeshorrible dialogue. All in an overall fail of a movie. The makings werethere for a good movie and someone without talent (probably thedirector) got in the way.

Unrealistic from start to finish

I can tell the producers were going for a Samuel L Jackson version of"The Hitcher" - but they failed miserably - mainly because thecharacters and storyline are completely unbelievable. With any movie, you have to ask yourself if a rational person would make the samedecisions given the same circumstances. In the case of "Meeting Evil,"the answer is, "No." Not just once or twice, but throughout the entirefilm. The irrational train of thought starts at the very beginning of thefilm when SLJ knocks on Luke Wilson's front door and asks him to helppush his 70's era full-steel muscle car so he can "pop the clutch."Apparently, this sort of thing happens all the time in Wilson'sneighborhood, because he cheerfully starts pushing.SLJ guns the engine and burns Wilson's leg with the car's open headers.Wilson curses SLJ out, then accepts a ride to the hospital - eventhough he's still within walking distance of his own house. Once he'sin the car, SLJ guns the engine again and tears down the road doing 100or so in a residential zone, then stops for gas - even though he onlyneeds two gallons to fill it up. Again, Wilson seems unshaken and just hangs out for the ride... Oh, andthe convenience store they pull into happens to have full service pumps(only exists in Oregon and New Jersey, even though the movie issupposedly set somewhere in the south). SLJ tries to pay the $2 tabwith a credit card, at which point the attendant asks for ID.Seriously? Show me one store where ANY purchase requires an ID withyour card. Most don't even require a signature for small purchases. Themovie is that way from start to finish. It may be enjoyable, but only if you check any rational thought orbrain power at the door.

Stupid

First of all the concept itself has become a cliché. So unless yougoing to do something better than what has already been done regardingfilms that involve an intruder, then scrap the idea. And it was loadedwith flaws. The worst part was when John(the victim) had already beenquestioned by the police, he is concerned about his family, the policesend people to guard his house, but come on he never described the badguy to them?? They don't know what they are looking out for when hegets there, its ridiculous. And when the bad guy gets into the housethey actually let him manipulate them psychologically vis a vis someaffair John's wife has been having, its really stupid.

Stunned By How Bad This Is

First, I do not blame the actors here. They clearly struggled gamelywith the (very) limited material and tenuous plot with which they hadto work. But, what is with the plot holes here big enough through which to drivea 4x4 pickup truck?1. If a sinister-looking stranger shows up at your suburban door withan "emergency" then refuses the use of your cell phone to call forhelp, shouldn't that be a big red flag?2. If you meet your ex in a bar, should she blithely offer the use ofher car to said sinister looking-stranger (you just met minutesbefore)?I could continue, but you get where I'm going.I turned this thankless, pointless tripe off soon after that. What ashame that world-class actors like Luke Wilson and Samuel L. Jacksonhave been reduced to taking mindless, terribly written roles likethese. Bad. Bad. Bad. AWFUL.
