Hilorious, Paul Hogan

Well, I watched this movie a little while ago , and I am only nowgetting around to writing a comment on it. I never use to be that big on Paul Hogan, I never liked him all thatmuch to be honest. But not after watching this. This movie was funnysay the least, And when I first pop ed in the movie I was thinking thatit was going to be some old movie that was just thrown out there inhopes of having a little money. But Honsitly I was surprised , it wasenjoyable, and it wasn't boring. I also liked the idea that CubaGooding Jr's Character, wasn't able to speak, and how Lighting Jackwasn't able to read without his glasses , but how he tried to hide itfrom everyone. For anyone who hasn't seen this movie, and they like agood comedy, or Paul Hogan for that matter. What are you waitingfor....? Go rent it ! Another One Line review.

Apparently after his X-rated shinanigans in Crocodile Dundee the Australian dude cooled down, ate a Vegimite sandwich, washed it down with a cold Foster's, then sucked on an Energizer battery before he got a mute partner called: Cuba Gooding Junior whom he tortured until he talked and said, "Show me the money", he got him to talk soooooo well Cuba can only now utter, "Show me the money" but at least he won the Oscar anyways, then these two go on a fast-paced adventure which I can't recall since I fell asleep halfway through this snorefest, extremely good for insomnia, not the Dinero flick but the actual infliction, it works better than valium my friends and is not habit forming.

Thank goodness western-comedies are a rare thing.

There are tons of comedies made every year. Not too many of them areabout the old west It's also not a mix that really ever works out,without becoming a spoof of the genre and use all of its formulaicelements.The story seems to lack a clear purpose. It's hard to say what themovie is really about and were its heading to. One top of that, thingsjust don't ever flow well in the movie. Everything seems to happensuddenly and without a reason for the rest of the story.On its comical level its also a rather weak one. For a comedy it surelyhas some few real laughs. It's one of those comedies that keeps youwaiting for a punch-line that just never comes. On top of that thesituations in this movie just aren't humorous. Guess they thought thatthe movie would already be strong and funny enough by making it abuddy-flick, about an old bandit and a mute bandit-wannabe. Paul Hogan isn't too bad in this movie, although he was clearly far tooold for his role at the time. He provides the movie with its bestcomical moments and some good funny dialog. The Cuba Gooding Jr.character is a bit of a weird one. He's a mute who works at a store andhe obviously feel that he is above the simple town-folk and then forsome unexplained reasons decides to become a bandit and team-up with,the obviously incapable, bandit Lightning Jack Kane. It also makes youwonder what's the challenging thing for a character to play a mutecharacter. Cuba Gooding Jr. really isn't a bad actors but he too oftenappears in such weak movies and uninteresting comical roles, that itmakes you wonder why he keeps doing it. Guess that he just has funplaying in these type of movies. I'm happy that at least someone hadfun. Pat Hingle is also in this movie, in a typical Pat Hingle role.Too bad that they didn't gave his character more screen time, thoughthey potentially really could had done that.The movie is rather good looking and it doesn't look like some cheapattempt. The costume were especially nice. The musical score on theother hand didn't seemed fitting. It's one of those simplistic scoresthat sound as if it was completed months before the movie finishedshooting and therefor doesn't fit or add anything to the images.Has its moments but overall a below average and totally uninterestingcomedy attempt.5/10

intriguingly amusing

This review is from: Lightning Jack (DVD) Paul Hogan,and Cuba Gooding jnr. a fabulous duo, it is a movie well worth watching more than once,it is very entertaining,the type of movie where you don't want to leave your seat until it is over, buy it you will be pleased you did.i don't want to give the story away,it would be ruined then.it is a brilliant western mixed with loads of comedy and touching moments.

lacking in freshness but watchable

Lightning Jack Kane (Hogan) is an aging Australian outlaw living in theold west who's elusive but doesn't get the respect he feels hedeserves. He contemplates retirement, but before that can happen he hasone final wish to make major headlines. When a bank robbery goes awry,he takes a mute store clerk (Gooding) hostage, but they unexpectedlybond, develop a genuine friendship, then try to help each other out byforming an unlikely partnership to try and pull off a big score thatwill attract the necessary attention. The two leads make a surprisinglyengaging team, and there are some enjoyable moments, but the wholething is familiar and obvious. **½

The Whole Family Liked This Western Comedy!

Yikes, some people just don't like Paul Hogan, do they? After seeing a surprisingly negative review of this movie when I logged on to buy the DVD, I decided to add my two cents. This is a VERY entertaining movie. It's well-paced, originally plotted and funny! Really. As the two heroes of the story fumbled their way through one sloppy crime after the other, I chuckled and looked forward to each new scene. This is not just for hardcore Western lovers. My mother enjoyed it, my kid loved it, my brother liked it, etc. That's why I'm buying it. Of course, I happen to like my westerns light -- think of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Quigley Down Under, Support Your Local Sheriff, Shanghai Noon, etc. I give it 5 stars for being purely entertaining. (Made me go rent Crocodile Dundee. I liked that, too.)

A greatly overlooked movie.

This movie is one of the best comedy westerns for a long time and givesitsstars ample time to perform.Paul Hogan plays pretty much the same character as he did in CrocodileDundee, only with a bit more heart, as a failed outlaw trying to make anamefor himself in the Wild West with one big heist. His only partner isplayedby Cuba Gooding Jr., in a superb early performance as a dumb black shopassistant, with shows both comedic talent, and a depth to the characterthatHogan himself probably didn't know was there when he wroteit.A series of wonderfully scenes in bars all over the West, culminate in aperfect last heist that nobody knows about, and robs Hogan of his wantedfame.Unfortunately, the box-office showed less confidence in the movie thanit'sinvestors on the Aussie stock-market did, but do not let that deter youfroma very funny movie.

One of the most entertaining comedy/westerns

If you like western or comedy movies, you will probably like "Lightning Jack." Paul Hogan stars as Lightning Jack, a cowboy that is famous for craftily robbing banks. He is one of the most wanted criminals in the country. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is a mute that later tries to team up with Lightning Jack and become a successful robber and cowboy in his own right. That's when the movie gets a lot better and more interesting. It will keep you interested throughout the movie so you can find out if Lightning Jack will remain successful at robbing banks across America or if he'll get caught. The movie also has a lot of funny parts that make it even better.

Inoffensive charm

It could have been a horrible vanity project by Paul Hogan, but it turnedout to be an inoffensive comedy. Not particulary funny or clever, but itpassed the time.Cuba Gooding Jr was very good considering he wasn't allow to talk at all.Even Paul Hogan was didn't ham it up too much.It isn't a great western or a great comedy but it isn't bad and, unlessyoupay to see it, may even leave you with a half-amused littlesmile.

Likable and entertaining Western / Comedy

Should have been called the 'Legendof Cactus Jack', but anyway...'Cro-codiel Dundee' goes west and robsbanks using Havana Gooding, Jr. (play-ing a deaf mute with a slade to write on!) as foil or diversion. Well filmed,with good performances all around andbelievable if not taken too seriously.Well, at least it's better than SnowDogs!

Paul Hogan, Cuba Gooding Jr. & Beverly D'Angelo All Worked Together To Make This A Cool Movie. It's Not The Best Western And It Isn't The Worst. It's Somewhere In The Middle And It Is Worth Taking A Look At. Cuba Is The Man!

Average film

Lightning Jack is an average Western Comedy that has a few laughs. Itthougha lot of the well known and established formulas and is neither better norworse, than a lot of other comedies out there. Paul Hogan stars as JackKanea veteran outlaw who finds himself part of a dying breed an unable to getadecent headline. Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as the mute clerk Ben Doyle whowants to join up with Kane and become an outlaw.The acting is average. Hogan seems to run on much of his routine fromCrocodile Dundee. Some of the time though he seems to have troubledelivering his lines convincingly. Cuba Gooding Jr. is amusing as the muteDoyle but occasionally overacted to the point where it made me cringe. Thechemistry between the two isn't bad, but it isn't great either. Much likethe film itself.There's nothing noteworthy about the direction or cinematography. Thestorymoves along alright, but the script is mediocre and gives us a fewcompletely unnecessary scenes. There is rarely any musical score to takenote of, and what little there is, is average stuff to enhance the comedicelements.The film is not a complete waste of time. Some of the jokes do hit theirmark, and Hogan has charm. There are several better Western comedies outthere though, such as Maverick, but if you're looking for some mildentertainment some rainy day, Lightning Jack can prove to be entertainingenough.

This review is from: Lightning Jack (DVD) Hogan directed this movie and did a good job with both directing and acting. You can almost believe he is as fast with a gun as he claims in the movie. Cuba Gooding plays a non speaking part but his antics bring laughter to the movie.

THE 2ND WORST I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!!

The reason I say this is the 2nd worst is because Crododile Dundee in L.A. is the worst.After I saw this movie in the theater I swore off seeing anything with Paul Hogan again,and the woman I was dating at the time,who liked the movie when we saw it was booted faster than lightning,jack.The plot is terrible as are the actors,sets,sound and directing.I had reasonably expected Cuba Gooding JR. to play a decent role since he had a few good parts under his belt but his deaf,mute character was ridiculous.I had thought at the time this poor guy had just killed his career but I am glad I was wrong.He has since put this behind him and went on to achieve an Oscar while Paul Hogan still bumbles around like a wallaby with a hangover from drinking to much Foster's Lager.If you want to see Cuba at his best see him Pearl Harbor in a small but pivotal role or Jerry Maguire or the upcomung Rat Race.If you want to see Paul Hogan at his best he's probably on a cancelled Austrailian postage stamp .

Open when most stores are closed!

This review is from: Lightning Jack (DVD) I made four purchases around 9PM MST in Eastern Oregon.Where most stores were closed these guys were up and running in New York, and my purchase of the DVD Lightning Jack quickly went through. And I received it no later than three-days. The product was in perfect condition when received. This is my first time using amazon.com and I made four orders. DVDa2z was the quickest to respond and a low price I could not ignore. Thank you, this is another comedy for my young family to watch.
