Beats the Pants off AI

To bad Spielberg didn't opt to make a movie more like D.A.R.Y.L. instead of AI. D.A.R.Y.L. is a boy robot. He lives with a family that falls in love with him. When it looks like he will be deactivated the ensueing chase scenes with an exceptional flight in a Blackbird jet is great. If you like movies like "Flight of the Navigator", "The Explorers", or "ET" you should enjoy this movie.

FINALLY! - PURE 80's FARE!

This review is from: D.A.R.Y.L. (DVD) Engaging, heartwarming and intelligent film that makes you think "What If?". Saw this when it opened and have liked it ever since but this DVD release was way overdue. Have watched in on laserdisc many times. Watch this, "Wargames" and "The Manhattan Project" for pure eighties escapism!

Decent

Look, it was 1985, not 2005! You shouldn't expect the best special effects. But this had a decent sci-fi story to it. I wouldn't have come up with it myself. I say whoever doesn't have a good time with this movie is a stiff piece of plywood.

A Great Family Classic

This review is from: D.A.R.Y.L. (DVD) I watched this movie sometime late in the 1980's. As a boy I thouroughly loved the imagination in the idea behind the story and the fun that was so well matched with the plot and drama. The movie is entertaining and at the same time serious and it is true to reality within the context of the movie and its main subject, DARYL who is a real boy with a computer for a brain. Any family would have fun and enjoy watching this, and what boy wouldn't dream of flying a top secret aircraft as we all dream of being pilots and astronauts when we get older. This video is still fun to watch as an older guy just to go back to those dreams and share a moment with the nephew as well.

Another Great Movie from the 80s

Well,I believe this is one the greatest movies from the 80s.I reallylove the movies made during the 1980s,although I was born in late1986.Really,80s produced many great movies, like ET,Back to the FutureTrilogy, the Goonies,Inidana Jones and many other ones. You can considerDaryl to be another kid adventure movie, just like the Goonies.Thismovie gives me a feeling that it has something in common with the movieArtificial Intelligence. They both have a robot boy who wants to be anormal kid, right?Yeah, however,I prefer Daryl to AI,Daryl is morerealistic, like that suburban lifestyle around here the USA. So if youlike kids, adventure, suburban life, and you're also nostalgic and sci-fiminded,I suggest you seeing this Daryl.

What an awesome movie

D.A.R.Y.L. has to be right up there in my top-15 movies of all time, and for good reason. Quality action, thought-provoking plot, and killer acting make this cutting-edge high-tech cyberthriller a must-see. The movie came out at an impressionable time for me, and it made a big impact. I remember seeing it and thinking, 'How great would it be to be a robot!' For a few months after seeing the film, I tried living life robotically. I would approach my problems in a cold, logical manner - no friends, no flirting with girls - and I tried not to ever laugh. Whenever it was time to eat with people I would say, "This unit does not technically need your primative foodstuffs, but the basic protein compounds should provide some benefit once my servos have broken them down into a more usable form." You should have seen the stares THAT got! I think people really started to think I was a robotic being!Eventually though, enough taunting and failure on the baseball field helped me realize that I was just a mere human after all, and that I had better stop pretending. But I've never stopped loving this movie, and all of the positive and warm things it makes me feel. If you like movies about robot boys, check it out!

Surprising, light fantasy

Simon Wincer has kept his film "D.A.R.Y.L." plain and simple, whichmakes for a surprisingly enjoyable, light fantasy-adventure pic aboutan extremely gifted young boy whose severe memory loss finds him in afoster home while he awaits word of his real parents. The script from David Ambrose, Allan Scott and Jeffrey Ellis never getstoo in-depth (ideal for the kids), complicated nor conscientious, andthe message is very straight forward. This ensures the movie will neverbecome trite nor ridiculous, but its pure simplicity also guarantees itwill never be an ingenious techno-thriller either. The middle groundWincer finds is pleasant enough. As a matter of fact everything about "D.A.R.Y.L." - both the film andthe character - is just plain nice, with an easy music score fromMarvin Hamlisch and an agreeable cast including Mary Beth Hurt andMichael McKean (two actors we don't see enough of - you may rememberHurt in "The World According to Garp" as Robin Williams' wife), KathrynWalker, Colleen Camp, Josef Sommer and Barret Oliver as "Daryl".Tuesday, February 11, 1997 - Video

Hollywood Demonstrates Lack of Imagination...Again!

Hollywood and its producers demonstrate their lack of imagination in thisflat, predictable sci-fi drama. At its heart, DARYL is merely a reworking of Pinnochio: an artificiallifeform who wishes to be a real boy. the story is twisted by throwing in afew power-hungry generals who want to turn the boy into a Terminator. Tocombat them, the androids creators are given moral consciences, which putsthem in the role of Gepetto. When the story drags, the director throws in a few ludicrous car chases andthen tops it off with the theft of an SR-71.Hollywood is famous for dusting off old stories and reworking them into'new' creations. How sad that Carlo Collodi's classic story should be socasually mangled.

A boy is just a boy even if he is also a robot

When I review D.A.R.Y.L. I review and rate is out of nostalgia. It was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid and I watched it many many times. The movie is about a boy who is really a robot with artificial intelligence and emotions as well. He escapes the research facility where he was created and is adopted by the Andersons, who are scientists (comes in handy when something goes wrong with D.A.R.Y.L. The movie is a bit like Pinocchio, a boy who yearns for that human feeling. The movie deals with issues of love, being a kid and even the right to be. Overanalyzing much for a kid's movie? Maybe. But, I really liked this movie growing up. It is an excellent movie for children that throws in a bit of action here and there. But, it is also very heartfelt and all-in-all a feel good movie. It is definately better than A.I. - Artificial Intelligence (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)

About as good as it gets for what it tries to do

I knew I'd like this movie as soon as daryls friend nicknamed his sister 'Hooky'~amatuer hooker. It cracked me up. Anyways the movie succeeded in my mind and was a blast to see. That kid was smart, and I wish they showed the reaction of the fathers face when he found out that he has over a million in his bank-account. Movie wasn't epic but was almost as good as it can possibly get for what it was trying to be, a great family sci-fi adventure. BTW Hooky was extremely hot and I love movies with those old video games, pole position ftw.

SciFi movie for all family

This review is from: D.A.R.Y.L. (DVD) This is a science fiction movie of the eighties. A near perfect kid gets lost and appears amnesic. He is placed with a couple that volunteers as foster parents, in hope to qualify for being adoptive parents. D.A.R.Y.L. soon shows that he is too good to be... I will not spoil the fun by telling you more. Don't forget the popcorn.

A classic from the 1980s, one of the few kids movies that manges to be both touching and thoughtful in a mature way

As with each decade movies from the 1980s have a very unique style thatcannot be fully described in words but to those individuals who grew upin the era it is unmistakable. A true 1980s film is one that evokeshope, that any dream can truly be achieved, that good will alwaystriumph over evil and that feel good cheesy music, colourful baggyshirts and inappropriate sunglasses will put a smile on your face.Whilst the most memorable 1980s pictures focus on comedy, romance andsuccess (e.g. Ghostbusters, Mannequin, Wall Street etc) there areoutliers that go in a different direction but still retain the basicheart of this era: the feel good factor. DARYL tells the story of aseemingly abandoned child who is adjusting to a new life with fosterparents, the story takes a twist however when it is revealed that he isreally an experiment in artificial intelligence. The target audience isprimarily kids and family and such spectators are rewarded with all thenecessary ingredients that this movie should have. It successfullytouches upon the aspects of life that boys would see as fun whengrowing up and through DARYL the audience can fantasise about drivingin high speed car chases, flying planes, being a star sportsman, videogames player and being super smart. What more could a kid want in life? The movie remains engrossing throughout despite a slow pace as a resultof a very strong performance by the lead character. DARYL is athoughtful, touching, interesting and entertaining movie that despitebeing more than 20 years does not really feel dated (the true sign ofany classic). For those who grew up in the 1980s movies like DARYL willalways have special meaning as they represent an innocence and hopethat sadly most of us lose as we grow older and cynicism kicks in. As astandalone sci fi family film DARYL takes itself seriously whilstknowing how to have fun, is thought provoking and delivers an eveningof entertaining escapism for the entire family. After more than 20years there are few family films being released today that can make thesame claim.

D.A.R.Y.L. Blows the Big One!

D.A.R.Y.L. blows the big one, if you know what I mean! This movieattempted at what Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence achieved. You canchalk this one up as an absolute cheeseball. I almost gave up on itafterthe nauseating Ballgame scenes, but I became a little more interestedwhenthe plot picked up after Daryl is taken away by the governmentscientists. Stick around for a pretty decent cop chase but I doubt you'll make itthatfar!

Pure Bliss

This is one of those movies that stick with you for a long time. It was well done and complete. By far better than AI or I, Robot, this movie remains my favorite movie of all. It is wholesome and fun with a great lesson in humanity, perfection, and what it means to be loved. People should take a movie such as this to heart because it holds ideas that are necessary to understand what a diverse world should hold most important and strive towards.

DARYL is actually a Cyborg not a robot

During the movie Dr. Stewart made a comment to Joyce, Andy and Turtlethat DARYL was conceived in a test-tube and that only his brain is acomputer while the rest of him is human. Also while conception ispossible in a "testtube" DARYL still would need a surrogate mother inorder for him grow into an infant. Also was Dr Stewart the sperm doner? That would make him a cyborg not a robot. However, my problem with thisis that this would mean that his human brain would have had to beensurgically removed after birth and a computerized brain put in itsplace. His computer brain size would have to be extremely small to beplaced in an infants skull. Also as DARYL grew from an infant to apre-adolescent child his computer brain would have to had been changedto a accommodate his growing skull. Unless of course the scientistworking on this government project waited until DARYL became apre-adolescent child before removing his human brain and replacing itwith a computer brain. I enjoyed this movie but it lacked anexplanation as to when and how his computer brain was placed in hisskull.
