Plot Summary:
Aladdin is a street-urchin who lives in a large and busy town long ago with his faithful monkey friend Abu. When Princess Jasmine gets tired of being forced to remain in the palace that overlooks the city, she sneaks out to the marketplace, where she accidentally meets Aladdin. Under the orders of the evil Jafar (the sultans advisor), Aladdin is thrown in jail and becomes caught up in Jafars plot to rule the land with the aid of a mysterious lamp. Legend has it that only a person who is a diamond in the rough can retrieve the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Aladdin might fight that description, but thats not enough to marry the princess, who must (by law) marry a prince.

Robin Williams made this worth watchingI'm sorry, but I never took interest in why people would care forAladdin or Jasmine when all along it was Robin Williams as the geniethat gave the movie it's heart and soul. Most people and critics alikehad applauded the film for being more of a Robin William's movie thancaring for the other characters. The title character (Aladdin) is a street thief with his trusted monkeyAbu (voice of Frank Welker) in which the thief must do what he can tosurvive until he meets a woman who's about to be punish before savingher. What he realizes is that the woman he saved (Jasmine) is aprincess in which she must only marry a prince and not some peasant offthe streets until Aladdin embarks on a journey with a prisoner ofhidden treasures before finding a magic lamp with one insane genie(Robin Williams). Just like any other movie with a genie in a lamp,it's all about the three wishes in which one of them grants Aladdin thewish to be a prince to woo Jasmine. To me, it's all about Robin Williams and his impersonation of everybodyto Groucho Marx, Arsenio Hall, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), andanybody you can think of that saves this movie. |

Still doesn't get old since 1992Ever since the Little Mermaid's unexpected success, Disney's been cranking out films every 2-3 years and after Beauty and the Beast they worked on Aladdin. Was a smash hit despite not having any name actors, although Robin Williams is recognizable, and a bit of controversy with one of the opening lyrics. What was also different was the approach to the story. Disney always had films that were self-contained: no pop culture references. Here Genie is doing imitations left and right and it was quite different but yet it worked.Aladdin, a street rat(basically a less-offensive word for "bum"), dreams of living in a luxurious lifestyle without having to steal for food and avoiding guards while doing so. Jasmine, the sultan's daughter and princess, wishes to choose whomever she marrys without it being forced unto her. Chance encounter makes them run into each other and he falls in love(of course). Meanwhile, Jafar is after a treasure in the Cave of Wonders but not just anyone can enter, it has to be a "diamond in the rough", which just happens to be Aladdin. Aladdin is trapped in the cave but stumbles upon an hyperactive Genie in a magical lamp and realizes that the way to get to Jasmine is to make himself a prince. Jafar finds the lamp however and Aladdin must stop him without the use of the Genie. Before the realistic Lion King(well as far as talking animals go, there was no magical powers a la Cinderella or 50 story villains like Ursula or Maleficent), Aladdin continues with its sense of wonder where anything can happen. Props has to be given to Robin Williams, who goes as fast as rapper who drank too much coffee, he's non-stop here. The soundtrack is incredibly catchy but oddly there was something different in this one. Ursula had Poor Unfortunate Souls, Gaston(Beauty and the Beast) had well, Gaston, and Scar from Lion King had Be Prepared, yet Jafar didn't get his own song. Considering Disney usually likes to get the villain to sing, that was odd but oh well. Also Jonathan Freeman, voice of Jafar gives a very good performance here.I don't know if Disney's doing it's entire catalogue with the Platinum edition stuff(they're almost up to 40 already) but this was a good addition. On the way we have Bambi in march, I believe Cinderella next year, then Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations and Lady and the Tramp I think in the coming years. I hope they do the Gold releases too(Robin Hood especially, Hercules, Mulan and the Aristocats) but in october, you should check this one out too. |

Magical Fun!Certainly one of the most entertaining Disney films to date (especially for our younger audience), Aladdin is the charming tale of the Arabic "street-rat" who meets a genie that will grant him three wishes. When Aladdin wishes to be a prince, he tries desperately to win the heart of the beautiful Princess Jasmine. The animation in this film is breathtaking, particularly the palace which Princess Jasmine lives in and the cave in which Aladdin discovers the genie's lamp. All the music in this film is great fun for the kids, and the musical numbers are surprisingly fun, not stupid. Also great about Aladdin are the voices. Gilbert Godfrey and Robin Williams provide endless humor as a Eago the parrot and Genie, the genie (respectively). All of the voices, however, fit the film perfectly.I loved Aladdin. It's amongst the best Disney films ever! Please go watch it! (Saddly, Disney has neglected to put it on DVD!) |

Disney DaysOn Dec 1 and Dec 2 I will be reviewing Disney movies, that I enjoyed ad ones that I didn't when I was little. This is the last one that I will be doing for now. Aladdin was great for kids, and I still enjoy it now! This movie kicks all of those knew Disney's (Brother Bear, Freaky Friday remake") out! Rent this and watch it with a son/daughter, brother/sister, or whatever! They will like it and you'll like it too! |

A Magical MovieAladdin is an orphan stealing what he needs to eat. Jasmine is the princess, but is unhappy to be forced to marry. One day, they meet in the market, and its love at first sight. But Jasmine can only marry a prince. Meanwhile, Jafar's schemes to go from advisor to Sultan bring him across Aladdin's path. But when Aladdin finds the Genie of the lamp, things really get interesting. And fun. As anyone who has seen this movie will tell you, Robin Williams as the Genie absolutely makes this movie. I still haven't caught all his characters and impersonations, but they still make me laugh. The plot itself is better then their usual fairy tale romance with Jafar making a truly evil villain. The songs are some of their best and most memorable, especially the romantic song "Whole New World." And the climax is one of my favorites because of how cleaver it is. The animation is beautiful with vibrant colors bringing the story to life.I've been looking forward to this DVD release since it was announced. And let me tell you, it looks and sounds great. Perfect widescreen, and the immersive audio mix is truly breathtaking. Extras include two commentary tracks and a fun pop-up trivia option. The story got quite an overhaul from the original version they were thinking of, and some of the original material is presented here, including a song recorded by Clay Aiken. Disc two features a reunion of the producers, animators, and voice cast interspersed with behind the scenes material. Honestly, this felt like it was leaving stuff out and could have been more in depth. There's also a tribute to composure Alan Menken, games for kids, and the usual art galleries. Most noticeably missing from the extras is Robin Williams. With all the other principle voice cast returning for the extras, I was really disappointed not to hear from him. This is a great movie in every sense of the word that everyone will enjoy watching many times. While the extras don't seem quite as impressive as previous Platinum Edition titles, there's still plenty here for fans. A disc well worth getting. |

OverestimatedAnd here we come to the second worst Disney film, only topped by 'thelittle mermaid'. The music is fine. Disney, you know? But the animationcannot be actually be called beautiful or the like, and the story ishasty and has no substance, the villain a stereotype, and the ending,as the whole story, predictable.I guess the only good thing is the genie, and Iago and the flyingcarpet perhaps. You see, the minor characters are to a certain degreefunny and amiable, if you can call genie a minor character, butAladdin, Jasmin and Jafar are shallow and kind of boring. Therefore four out of ten stars (quite clement), paying tribute togenie and the music. |

Horrible....Why this new edition? I really do not understand the reason...There was no need to change the music..'A whole new world' sung by Regina Belle and Peabo Bryson IS a masterpiece, maybe one of the most beautiful song and interpretation of the last decades...And the new awful, disastrous version by Jessica Simpson and her Hubby really makes me feel so...depressed about the hard times we are living in the US now...because all this shameful,TV-derivated trash which surround us is the mirror of our current society and culture. |

As fresh as when it first came outFirst, the good news. "Aladdin" is scheduled to be the next in the Disney Platinum Series of deluxe DVD packages, and will be released in October 2004 (I'm getting my info from the packaging of "The Lion King").Now, the better news - having seen this charming movie on many occasions, I know it will be well worth the wait - especially with a decent Dolby 5.1 mix. |

An Outrageously Funny and Highly Entertaining Disney FilmDisney was on a roll when "Aladdin" was on its way out, with a stringof successes behind them ("Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Oliver &Company", "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast"), creativitywas coming back to the Disney studios and entertaining films were onceagain coming out. These films mostly soared above the efforts from the70s and 80s ("The Aristocats", "Robin Hood" and "The Black Cauldron" inparticular) and they showed that animation could be very successful.Happy times for animation fans and Disney fans."Aladdin" keeps that tradition going. Adapting the Arabian Nightstales, "Aladdin" depicts the title characters' attempts to win theheart of Princess Jasmine, who must only marry a prince. Aladdin getsthe help of an outrageous Genie in a lamp that evil Sorcerer Jafar isin pursuit of.In terms of animation, "Aladdin" has some stunning use computeranimation. Otherwise, the film is rushed. Of course, back in the early90s, these films were rushed to meet the release date, as Eisner &Katzenberg wanted to crank out one animated feature a year. Because ofthis (along with "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast"),"Aladdin"'s animation is rather sloppy on some scenes. It is milesabove most other animated features, but it can't come close to the bestof Disney animation. (see Walt Disney's first five films, "The LionKing" and "Tarzan") The songs are great. The Genie steals the show with"Friend Like Me". "A Whole New World" is a classic Disney love song."Arabian Nights" is good, and "Prince Ali" is a celebration song (muchlike "Be Our Guest" from "Beast" or "Festival of Fools" from"Hunchback"). The film is very funny, although a lot of the jokes aredated. This may explain why DVD sales weren't so hot in 2004. Whoknows? One other complaint I have is the similarities to RichardWilliams' long-in-production, but never finished "The Thief and theCobbler". Both plots are similar: Evil Grand Vizier who is also aSorcerer (Zig-Zag to Jafar) wants to take over and marry the Princess. Also, Jafar looks like Zig Zag, and so does the Genie. Williams' filmwas in production at the same time and was stopped because of thisfilm. However, Disney was not the thief, because the idea was startedback in the late 80s because lyricist Howard Ashman suggested Disney toadapt the story. It might have been the animators Williams' fired thatwent on to work for Disney. But whatever the flaws may be, "Aladdin" has a good story, greatcharacters and it's also very entertaining. A 9.5 out of 10. |

One of Disney's best post-modern era films of the 90sOK, I have to admit that I was only born in 1994 when The Lion King wasreleased, but my older sister was born before me in 1992 before Disneyreleased this. Sadly, though, we never saw it in the theaters andwaited to watch it on video. Our dreams had finally come true and weloved it as much as anyone else who had seen it and grew up with it.Now, I never read the story "One Thousand Arabian Nights", but I thinkthat this classic did some extreme justice to it. Sure, it does startoff a bit slow, but as the film progresses, it has it's heart just inthe right place thanks to it's being well thought out.The characters, much like the story, are engaging and likable with thelikes of Aladdin, the beautiful Princess Jasmine, Abu, the monkey,Iago, the parrot, the Sultan, Jafar (who is by far one of Disney's bestvillains in history) and Genie, who, thanks to Robin Williams' solidvoice-work, steals every scene with his hilarious moments and thecomedy is both timeless and forgettable. In fact, the voice actingisn't that bad at all especially Scott Weinger, Linda Larkin, JonathanFreeman, and let's not forget Jim Cummings as the leader of the palaceguards. I was like, "Winnie The Pooh/Tigger as a palace guard?Top-notch!" The music from Alan Menken is the epitome of brilliance and the songswere timeless and were not to be long forgotten including one of myfavorites "A Whole New World". The script is excellent and flawlesswith witty and hilarious dialog and the pacing is brisk and moves alongvery nicely. The strongest aspect, however, goes to the animation dueto it's beautiful visual look of Agrabah and solid character designs.Overall, this is one of the few movies that I grew up with as a kidback at the 90s and this will not be forgotten by not only families andtheir children, but long-time Disney fans as well. Totally recommendedand uh... Happy 20th Anniversary, Aladdin! |

Robin Williams' performance saves AladdinRobin Williams does a fantastic job as the voice of the Genie in Aladdin. My one problem with Aladdin is how insulting it is to the viewer in the way it plays on stereotypes, something Disney has been getting away with too long. I find it rather strange that the only Arabian characters with Arabian accents were the villains, while the good guys all have American accents. For the most part Aladdin is a very enjoyable movie, due in large part to Williams. Most of the songs are very good and fun to listen to. The animation is beautiful as always. |

Robin Williams makes this movie the way it isOMG I loved this film since I was a kid. I bought the DVD of it 2 yearsago and I was so glad that I bought it. The story is about a commonerwho stumbles across an enchanted lamp that holds a hilarious blue Geniewho grants him 3 wishes. Aladdin falls in love with an Arabian princesswho's father wants her to marry but she doesn't want to marry someonethat she doesn't love so one day she disguises herself as a commonerand as the people at the marketplace think that Aladdin is a street ratshe is smitten by him. I could go on but I am not giving away too manydetails as some people mightn't even see this film before. Packed withgreat music and a great message for people who are commoners and thatis 'Accept a person who isn't from a royal background and don't pretendto be a prince(which Aladdin did as he was in love with Jasmine and hethinks that she doesn't date or marry nobody's) and that you just haveto be yourself. The chemistry between Aladdin & Jasmine is absolutelyfantastic and I love the A Whole New World Scene because its somagical. The real star to this movie is of course Robin Williams whowas so hilarious in this movie I laughed so hard every time heimpersonates someone e.g Jack Nicolsen or that guy that plays theterminator Arnold (I don't know the surname) but having said that he isthe best comedian of all time along with Jim Carrey. The animation isvery well done and the ballad A Whole New World is so cute. A friendlike me & Prince Ali which is both sung by Robin Williams(yes folks hecan sing) are so funny I loved it. Aladdin is my 4th favourite movie ofall time along with The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast & Enchanted.Worth watching for all you Disney lovers like me. |

Evoking wonder and magic, Disney's animated version of the famous fable benefits from the melodic score, Robin Williams' voice as Genie, and a colorful gallery of supporting characters. |
